A whirlwind of activity sweeps us into the daily routine at the Archaeological Museum of Naples. Exhibitions are mounted, restoration projects are underway, as visitors from around the world move spellbound from room to room. The beauty of the museum is caught on film - not only its stunning arrangements of classical artworks, but also the close relationships, otherwise invisible, that form within its walls. Agalma (from the Greek word for statue, image) shows the museum as a living thing, and its works are captured in all their materiality and expressive power.

Filmography

2020 Agalma [doc]
2016 Cronopios [doc]
2015 Anatomia di un pensiero triste [short]

In the film the archaeological and cinematic perspectives overlap, lingering lovingly on the physiques of the statues and mapping out visions, points of view and new avenues for interpretation. Agalma is the relationship that is created between the artwork and the beholder, who is observed in the course of a ceaseless visual pilgrimage from one museum space to the next, as the ancient world comes alive, quotidian yet ineffable.

Doriana Monaco (Benevento, 1989) studied archaeology and art history at the University of Naples Federico II. In 2014 she was assistant director to Edoardo De Angelis on his film Perez. In 2015 she directed her first short, Anatomia di un pensiero triste. In 2016 she joined FILMaP, the documentary film workshop headed by Leonardo Di Costanzo. This allowed her to make the documentary Cronopios, selected for the Corso Salani Award lineup at the 2017 Trieste Film Festival, and she also started to develop her Agalma project.
