Sibilla, a radio reporter, travels to a small town in central Italy to make an audio documentary. There, in 1982, a young woman had been killed, in an act of apparently inexplicable violence. Through voices and sounds, Sibilla evokes the ghosts of a past event, recording the last reverberations of the victim’s memory.

“Sound is the tool by means of which Sibilla pursues the traces that a past event has left in a community. Memories of Lightning evokes a series of images that audiences won’t be able to see – only hear. The microphone allows for the staging of a sort of séance, in which the past resurfaces through conversations to be listened to, along with soundscapes made on the scene(s) of the crime, in search of a fossile radiation that still vibrates in the air.” (Riccardo Giacconi)

Riccardo Giacconi’s films have been screened at festivals such as the New York Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Critics’ Week at the Venice Film Festival, Visions du Réel, the Torino Film Festival, and the FID Marseille, where he received the 2015 Grand Prix in the international competition. In 2021, Giornate degli Autori premiered his film Diteggiatura. Giacconi co-founded the festival of collective listening Helicotrema and the audio storytelling studio Botafuego. He is currently a Fellow at the Film Study Center at Harvard University (2024-2027) and teaches at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, Boston.
