On a cold winter afternoon, António and Jota return from the front with their friends, looking for an ancient Roman thermal bath. They joke with each other while wading through swamps, recounting past tactical glories. The baths have reappeared after a long time spent under the water of a reservoir, and people of all ages curious about the discovery come to spend the day. But there is something mysterious about these thermal springs – the waters seem to exert an influence on the mood of the men, giving them the courage to say things they have never told anyone. As day turns to night, they confess their feelings and their fears of losing their best friend forever.

“Last Night I Conquered the City of Thebes is my first feature film. Every film presents a conflict between the linearity and circularity of time. Cinema has a unique way of presenting itself as both a fleeting and permanent experience, reminding us that life is ephemeral while sheltering us in a habitable and eternal temporality. The audience will travel through both a physical space and the folds of time, and seem to be immersed in another dimension. The idea of immersion and floating is relevant. Immersion, whether in the night, in water or in an intimate conversation, facilitates access to new sensitive and perceptive states. Floating in water allows us to take the pulse of gravity, a prolonged conversation can reveal other times and adapting us to the darkness allows us to gradually see the invisible. Electric light helps us see, but it hides what has always been there. The stars are an obvious example, but there are others. In the intimacy of a dark night, António confesses his loneliness to Jota. And, as their eyes adjust to the darkness, they discern what was previously invisible. Fiction gives me the opportunity to show characters telling things to each other that I have not dared to say to my own friends. I am interested in portraying this kind of intimacy between men and showing masculinity in its most vulnerable form.” (Gabriel Azorín)
Gabriel Azorín has directed the short films Greyhounds (2012), Tomorrow, the Bullet (2015) and The Noise of the Universe (2024). He is a member of the film collective lacasinegra.
