An Iranian-born artist/filmmaker living in the United States, Shirin Neshat is one of the most acclaimed visual artists on the contemporary art scene. In 2009, her first feature film Women Without Men received the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival; ten years earlier, her video installations Turbulent and Rapture had won the Golden Lion at the 48th Venice Biennale. Neshat won multiple kudos for her series Women of Allah, photos of veiled women adorned with obsessive tangles of Arabic calligraphy. Her artworks have been exhibited at the Tate Gallery and the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Kunsthalle in Vienna and the Museum of Contempory Art in Hiroshima. Neshat received the Crystal Award in 2014 at the Davos World Economic Forum. In 2021 she co-directed with Shoja Azari, Land of Dreams.
