Where to go and who to meet: an insider’s guide to the festival, the venues, and the filmmakers to (get to) know

For its 19th edition, Giornate degli Autori flings open the doors of the venues that are its new home, its Casa,  as of last year and welcomes its filmmakers and audiences, journalists, and audiovisual professionals. It all happens thanks to the A-list of Italian and international guests here at Giornate 2022 with their films or for our talks.

Steve Buscemi, Silvia D’Amico, Abel Ferrara, Stefania Sandrelli, Céline Sciamma, Filippo Timi, Tessa Thompson, and Roberta Torre, as well as cinematic masters like Artavazd Pelechian and Edgar Reitz, are just a few of the film personalities at this year’s showcase that places sharing and dialogue, on and off-screen, front and center at Giornate.

The screenings of films in the Official Selection – in competition or special events – will be held, as always, in the Sala Perla at the Palazzo del Casinò and are open to badge-holders at the Venice Film Festival and via coupons that can be booked online on the Biennale website.

Press screenings, repeat screenings, and those open to the public will take place at the Sala Corinto (Via Falier 4, Lido di Venezia), the tickets for which can be booked on the Biennale website. The Cinema Rossini in Venice and the Cinema Candiani in Mestre also host repeat screenings for the public (tickets required).

As for the program for Venetian Nights – the section co-organized with Isola Edipo – its special screenings and press activities will be held in the Sala Laguna (via Pietro Buratti 1), the Lido’s historic cinema located very near the PalaBiennale and reopened to festival audiences thanks to Giornate and Isola Edipo. Hard by the belltower of the church of Sant’Antonio, its theater will also host an array of talks and masterclasses arranged by Giornate and co-organized by a variety of institutional and cultural partners, such as SIAE, the Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, and MUBI. Venetian Nights screenings can be booked on the Giornate website, while certain events on the program need to be reserved by sending an email to laguna.edipore@gmail.com.

The Sala Laguna is at the center of the Casa degli Autori, the Giornate headquarters whose gazebos are the go-to spaces for press activities, photocalls, talks and panels open to the public, and other events.

A stone’s throw away, on the Riva di Corinto and opposite the Sala Corinto, the nerve-center of Isola Edipo hosts The Box, prime rendez-vous for all the daily activities of the international media and industry professionals: a superb place to work, with all the comforts as well as a breathtaking view of the lagoon and Venice beyond.

Last but not least, a number of events, including a Giornate fixture, the women’s creativity series Miu Miu – Women’s Tales, will be held at the Hotel Excelsior, the Veneto Region Space, the Italian Pavilion, and the space reserved for the Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo.
