All the numbers, venues, practical info, and guests of the 23rd edition

This year’s Giornate degli Autori is just a few days away, and it’s the first since its founding to go on without Giorgio Gosetti, to whom the 23rd edition is dedicated. Promoted by ANAC and 100autori, Giornate continues on its way forward, treading in the footsteps of its founder and, thanks to the support of the Biennale and a host of invaluable partnerships and collaborations, it is gearing up for two weeks packed with myriad events. Alongside the international selection and the Venetian Nights program, ample space will be given to talks, conferences, and other events addressing urgent issues of the present day, featuring Italian and international guests.

THE NUMBERS
Over the course of our 23rd edition, our program features 10 films in competition, 1 closing film out of competition, 5 special events, and 2 short films for the Miu Miu Women’s Tales collection, all world premieres held in the Sala Perla, in accord with the Venice Film Festival. As always, 9 films bow in Venetian Nights, the edgy showcase co-organized with Isola Edipo, screened in the Sala Laguna, and 4 special screenings make up #confronti this year, with 8 events rounding out its program. The competition slate includes 5 first films, while 4 feature LGBTQ+ themes mentioned by the Queer Lion Award.

THE VENUES
As every year, the titles in the Competition, Special Events, and Miu Miu Women’s Tales will be screened in the Sala Perla. This historic theater inside the Palazzo del Casinò, the focal point of the Venice Film Festival, will also host the awards ceremony for Giornate degli Autori and for the SIAE Andrea Purgatori Lifetime Achievement Award and the SIAE Creative Talent Award. Press screenings of the Official Selection titles and repeat screenings open to the public will be held in both the Sala Perla and the Sala Corinto.

The Cinema Rossini in Venice and the Cinema Candiani in Mestre are the go-to venues for repeat screenings for the “Circuito Cinema in Mostra” program.

Once again, the Casa degli Autori (via Pietro Buratti 1) is the venue of choice for filmmakers, actors, journalists, press offices, audiovisual professionals, and photographers, all welcome. Inside: the Sala Laguna, reopened on the Lido thanks to the joint efforts of Giornate degli Autori, Edipo Re, and the Patriarch of Venice; and thanks to our collaboration with Isola Edipo, this year as last it will host the Venetian Nights program as well as the #confronti slate of masterclasses and other events. Lastly, the Sala Bianca and the Gazebo are fitted out with all the technological support needed to host press activities, interviews, and the official Giornate protocols.

Two exhibitions, open to the public and organized on the Lido in collaboration with Giornate degli Autori, are both running September 2nd to the 11th. In the Sala Laguna, promoted by Isola Edipo and rossogranada, “Conquest of the Useless” features unseen photos by Beat Presser from the set for Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo, while La Villa (lungomare Guglielmo Marconi 56) hosts “Pictures that dream. Il Cinema di Dave McKean”, curated and produced by Comicon for Venezia Cult.

Other venue, other rooms: the Hotel Excelsior hosts the traditional showcase of female creativity, Miu Miu Women’s Tales (at the Veneto Region / Veneto Film Commission Space), and also the fourth edition of the Declaration of Filmmakers, this year titled “Men and Women Filmmakers at Venice”, organized by ANAC, 100autori, WGI, AIDAC, ACMF, and AIR3, which will see leading European associations take part, among them SRF, ARP, and FERA (in the Italian Pavilion).

ACCESS AND RESERVATIONS
Admission to the Sala Perla and Sala Corinto is granted to both Venice Film Festival badge holders (upon reservation) and the general public (upon purchase of tickets on the Venice Biennale website: biennalecinema.vivaticket.it).

Admission to all events at the Casa degli Autori is free, with the only screenings and events requiring reservations to be found on the page www.giornatedegliautori.it/booking.asp , possibly as early as 48 hours before the film/event and up to 4 hours before they start. All the Venetian Nights titles will have repeat screenings in the Sala Laguna the day after their respective premieres, at 1pm, admission to which is free and no reservations required (except for Scarpe rotte).

Tickets must be purchased for repeat screenings, open to the public, of films on the “Circuito Cinema in Mostra” program held at the Cinema Rossini in Venice and the Cinema Candiani in Mestre

THE VIRTUAL SCREENING THEATER
Thanks to our collaboration with MYmovies, once again the virtual venue Biennale Cinema Channel –  www.mymovies.it/one/channel/biennalecinema – will allow Italian audiences to see a choice selection of films at the Venice Film Festival this year, in particular the 11 films on the Giornate degli Autori lineup (available for 72 hours after their official premieres, for up to maximum 1,000 viewers):
