In a dark-walled garage lit by white neon light, a young dark-haired woman in mechanic's overalls, covered in grease, is repairing a car, a rather massive car from the Eighties. Music fills the space, accompanying the mechanic's precise movements. Outside it is daylight; the garage door opens and the car eases cautiously into a Paris street. Behind the wheel, we recognize the young mechanic, sporting a different look, her leather outfit transforming her into a siren of the city. She drives on. One street, then another. The music stays with her. She stops to help a girl struggling to cross a street with a piece of furniture too heavy to carry. She pulls over briefly outside a hardware store to deliver some succulents. Music. Suddenly, a square comes into view, dominated by a majestic fountain ringed by a crown of stone lions, and there before the lions a woman waits, all alone. A travel bag at her feet; she is beautiful in her embroidered chapka and fur-lined jacket, as if she has just arrived, this very moment, from the far north. The driver smiles; her face lights up. She circles the square and, after parking haphazardly, is at last reunited with the traveler. The two of them in the car, driving. Music.

Claire Denis (Paris) spent her childhood in several African countries, most notably Cameroon. Returning to France at the age of twelve, she discovered auteur cinema through a film-loving teacher. In 1972, she graduated from IDHEC and became an assistant director, working alongside Robert Enrico (Le vieux fusil in 1975 and L'Empreinte des géants in 1980) and Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas in 1984 and Wings of Desire in 1987). She then worked with Jim Jarmusch on Down by Law (1986). In 1988, she directed her debut feature, Chocolat, a semi-autobiographical story set in colonial Africa in the 1950s. In 1996, she won the Golden Leopard at Locarno for Nenette and Boni. In 2022, she garnered two awards, thanks to her film Both Sides of the Blade (Silver Lion at the Berlinale) and Stars at Noon (Grand Prix at Cannes). Her latest feature, The Fence, was released in 2025.
