Margot, a brilliant young scientist with a troubled marriage, disappears while hiking with her husband, Sam. Weeks later she miraculously reappears the day of her own memorial service. She remembers nothing about her life — except her research on Mars, which she is desperate to find and destroy. “Our story argues for great love, yet it shows the eternal limits of knowing the person we are in love with. It’s a bit like looking at Mars from Earth. From our earthly point of view, Mars was once exciting and ever distant, the red planet we lusted after. But now our view has changed. It is a place for us we could actually live, a terrain to be conquered. Subsequently, a terrain to be respected and protected. This is the case with love too: the way we love another tells as much about us as about them.” (Lili Horvát)

Lili Horvát grew up in Budapest. She studied audiovisual arts at the Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris and film directing at the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest. The Wednesday Child, Horvát's first feature, won the East of the West competition at Karlovy Vary 2015, and received numerous awards worldwide. In 2016, Horvát co-founded the production company Poste Restante, which produced her second feature, Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time. Preparations... debuted at Giornate degli Autori in 2020 and had its North American premiere at Toronto. Besides winning major awards worldwide, it was Hungary’s 2021 Oscar® entry, and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. In 2024, Horvát and her producing partner Dóra Csernátony produced Zsófia Szilágyi’s January 2 within the Biennale College program of the Venice Film Festival. My Notes on Mars is Horvát's English-language film debut.
