The Edipo Re Inclusion Award for Lifetime Achievement is bestowed on a global film figure who has distinguished himself or herself for a highly inclusive approach to filmmaking that is attentive to 'the Other' as a space giving rise to a fresh perspective that is open to diversity.

Margarethe von Trotta is one of Germany's preeminent filmmakers. Her films reflect her strong political engagement, exploring the conflict between the public and private spheres. As a leading exponent of New German Cinema, von Trotta has always placed women at the center of her oeuvre. Her female characters are strong, determined and courageous as they struggle against what is still a man's world.

Von Trotta will receive the award on September 3 at 7:30 pm at Isola Edipo. On September 5 at 6 pm, the filmmaker will hold a masterclass at the Villa degli Autori. Two of her films will be screened at the Sala Astra on the Venice Lido: Rosenstrasse and Hannah Arendt.

Margarethe von Trotta (Berlin, 1942) studied in Paris and Munich and went into theater initially, moving on to acting roles for directors Herbert Achternbusch and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. In 1975 she co-directed her first film with Volker Schlöndorff, The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum. Three years later she solo directed The Second Awakening of Christa Klages, but it was her 1981 film Marianne and Juliane, which won the Golden Lion, that secured her reputation as a master filmmaker. This was followed by the films Sheer Madness in 1983 and Rosa Luxemburg in 1986. From 1988 to 2000 she divided her time between television and the big screen. After the film The Promise in 1994, selected for the Berlinale, von Trotta made her next feature film, Rosenstrasse, in 2003, which competed at the Venice Film Festival, earning its star Katja Riemann the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. In 2012 von Trotta recruited one of her favorite actresses, Barbara Sukowa, for her film Hannah Arendt. Last year she directed the documentary Searching for Ingmar Bergman.
