Sybille, a divorced mother, can't stand watching her teenage son Samuel slip into a violent and meaningless life. She is also struggling with her own demons, past and present. As a last resort, she takes Samuel on a long journey across Kyrgyzstan. Accompanied only by their two horses, mother and son face the magnificent yet hostile natural environment, its dangers, its rewards, its people... and above all each other. Based on the novel Continuer by Laurent Mauvignier (Editions de Minuit, 2016).

"When I finished reading Laurent Mauvignier's novel, I could not keep myself from wondering if the journey I had just experienced was not one I should take with my own mother. I'm 42 years old and for the first time I felt that urge. I did not feel the immediate desire to adapt the book, perhaps it was too intimate. Would I dare go there? Later on, while having a discussion about the book, I found myself standing up with all my might for Samuel, the son. I heard myself say that he was also suffering from his own violence and that he was not only aggressiveness. The following day, I initiated the process of making my own adaptation of the novel."

Joachim Lafosse (Brussels, 1975) after graduating from the IAD, directed in 2004 his first feature film, Folie privée, selected for the official competition at the Locarno Film Festival. In 2006, he directed two feature films, Ça rend heureux (selected for competition at Locarno and winner of the Grand Prize of the Jury at the Premiers Plans Festival in Angers) and Nue propriété (in competition at the Venice Film Festival). In 2008 he directed Élève libre, presented at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes in 2008. Joachim Lafosse's reputation is growing from film to film, as shown by the international acclaim for À perdre la raison (selected for Un Certain Regard, where Emilie Dequenne won the award for Best Actress). In 2015 he directed Les chevaliers blancs, presented in Toronto and San Sebastian (Best Director Award). L'économie du couple premiered at the Directors' Fortnight in 2016.
