New Filipino cinema triumphs at Venice
In a surprising twist, the new wave of Filipino cinema emerges at festival's end as the star of Venice.
First, a master filmmaker like Lav Diaz receives well-earned acclaim for his astonishing Ang babaeng humayo (The Woman Who Left) and walks away with the Golden Lion.
Then a young artist like Eduardo Roy Jr pulls off an upset in a close call by winning the BNL People's Choice Award at Venice Days.
"When a nation's cinema is discovered and wins awards at a festival," says Giorgio Gosetti, director of Venice Days, "another chapter of film history is etched in our collective memory. We are proud and honored to be part of this historic moment, thanks to our Venice Days audiences. And we thank Eduardo Roy Jr, who believed in us."
