Ayiva has left his home in Burkina Faso in search of a way to provide for his sister and his daughter. Once in Italy, Ayiva adapts to life in his new country, but when tensions with the local community rise, things become increasingly dangerous.
"The sea crossing was the hardest thing to shoot. In this film I always stuck to one point of view, which means that if you're on that boat, you can't see the wave coming from three kilometers away that's going to wipe you out. Naturally, we couldn't do something like Life of Pi, but we had to convey the terrifying experience of being on that boat in the dark, so we found a way to set up such a situation and used special effects for the storm." [Jonas Carpignano, in an interview with Michela Greco in Cinecittà News]
JONAS CARPIGNANO's short films have been screened at film festivals around the world, starting with A Chjàna, which won the Controcampo award for Best Short Film at the 68th Venice Film Festival in 2011 and received a Special Mention at the Silver Ribbon Awards. His latest short film, A Ciambra, featured in the Official Selection of the 53rd Critics' Week at Cannes, where it won the Discovery Award. Carpignano returned to the Critics' Week this year, with his debut feature film, Mediterranea. In 2012, he was named one of the top 25 new faces in independent film by Filmmaker Magazine.
