Early summer. In a village in northern Turkey, Lale and her four sisters are walking home from school, playing innocently with some boys, but their play is seen as immoral and sets off a scandal that has unexpected consequences. The family home is progressively transformed into a prison; instruction in homemaking replaces school and marriages start being arranged. The five sisters, who share a common passion for freedom, find ways of getting around the constraints imposed on them.
"The first sequence, in which we see the girls playing in the sea, climbing on the shoulders of the boys, is something I experienced and was completely humiliated by, whilst my characters react in a more rebellious way. The project was driven by my desire to show everything I wanted to do and say when I was younger, giving my characters the courage that I never had." DENIZ GAMZE ERGÜVEN (Ankara), based in Paris, enrolled in the Directing Department of La Fémis Film School after a degree in literature and a master's degree in African history in Johannesburg. Her thesis film, the short A Drop of Water, screened at festivals including the Cinéfondation of the Cannes Film Festival and won the 2006 Leopard of Tomorrow at Locarno. Her debut feature Mustang premiered at Cannes' Directors' Fortnight.
