To the Moon is a beautiful and poetic cinematic ode to our moon. Made primarily from international cinematic archives in combination with literary fragments and original moonlit cinematography filmed across five continents, To the Moon steps lightly through the ages and ideas that people have drawn from the moon to create a meditative work of timeless resonance.

Filmography

2020 To the Moon
2015 The Great Wall
2014 Yximalloo [with Feargal Ward]

There is perhaps nothing more universal than looking at the moon. As long as humans have walked the earth, our heavenly companion has captivated the imagination. It has been sung to, implored, made woman and man; imagined as the beginning of heaven, the source of love, death and life itself; it has been utopia to our dystopic planet; held responsible for everything from insanity to fertility. A barren rock, we have made it our mirror. I have tried to draw these themes out in a film that embodies the universal experience of looking to the night sky. In a new age of distance and separation, I hope the film can remind us of our shared humanity - our connection through our dreams, our fears, our joys and our fragility.

Tadhg O'Sullivan is an Irish artist and film-maker working primarily in non-fiction cinema. Often working with literary sources and cinematic archive, his films often seek to evoke the timelessness of human experience, and to illuminate the present moment through ideas from the distant past. To the Moon is his third feature. Previous films - Yximalloo and The Great Wall - have screened at numerous major film festivals including FiD Marseille, MoMA Doc Fortnight, CPH:DOX, and Dokufest Kosovo.
