Tommaso and Alice have been together for fifteen years - never married, no children, no brilliant careers, either in music (him) or acting (her). They live in Rome, where they've bought an apartment, and that mortgage is the only real responsibility they've ever committed to. When their friends receive an invite to dinner at their place, they think they're going to tie the knot. Instead, the couple announces they're going to break up, but do it gradually, no rupture, and staying friends, naturally. It's a legitimate aspiration on their part, but a naïve one, and it runs right up against reality, and the rule that relationships end because people change. And no change is painless - nor should it be expected to be.

Filmography

2021 Una relazione
2013 Slow Food Story (doc)

"One thing about Italian films that has always sort of frustrated me, as a viewer, is that I don't really identify with the characters it puts on screen. I rarely find my own social habitat there, with its set of cultural references and linguistic tics. It's not that I have to see my own reflection in those characters, of course; it's just that they don't resemble anyone I know. In certain French films or mumblecore comedies from America, by contrast, there's a different perspective that depicts life - with all its wrongs, its mix of unpleasantness, flashes of cruel irony, sweetness and awkwardness - in a more authentic way, neither consolatory nor approximate: specific. And that specificity removes the barriers around the audience's suspension of disbelief, the result being a rush of empathy, at least for me. [Stefano Sardo]

Stefano Sardo (Bra,1972) is the co-creator, with Alessandro Fabbri and Ludovica Rampoldi, of the Sky series 19921993 and 1994. The same trio also wrote the three seasons of the Italian adaptation of In Treatment, and the films The Double Hour (Giuseppe Capotondi, in competition at the 2009 Venice Film Festival), The Invisible Boy (Gabriele Salvatores, 2015) and its sequel The Invisible Boy: Second Generation (Gabriele Salvatores, 2018). With Rampoldi, Sardo also wrote Baggio: The Divine Ponytail (Letizia Lamartire, 2021). Either alone or with other screenwriters, he has scripted numerous other films and TV series. In 2013 he directed the documentary Slow Food Story, which premiered at the Berlinale and Telluride. He has published the book L'America delle Kessler, the two Il ragazzo invisibile novels, and his latest, Una relazione, co-authored with Valentina Gaia, is soon to be published. As a musician, Sardo has made six albums and a soundtrack with Mambassa; some of their songs are featured in With You or Without You, his debut narrative feature.
