Fellini lived with a secret: the one investigated by Claudia, a Portuguese documentary filmmaker trying to make a film about him. The traces of the secret are in his "Book of Dreams" and in Fellini's relationship with Dr. Bernhard, his analyst and a pioneer of Jungian analysis in Italy, without whom the masterpiece 8 ½ would never have seen the light. Traces also appear in coincidences, interviews with friends, and places dear to Fellini: Rome, Rimini, or Jung's Tower House in Bollingen. But what Claudia discovers also makes up a tender, magical portrait: the certainty that, for Fellini, dreams are the only true reality.

"Fellini e l'ombra is an unusual film that mixes elements of fiction, animation and documentary to probe the creative unconscious of an absolute genius. It is a journey into Fellini's inner life, guided by his most intimate voice, interweaving memory and dreams, drawings and film images, photos and backstage that show the most secret side of the great filmmaker." [Catherine McGilvray]

Catherine McGilvray, director and screenwriter, lives in Rome. After receiving a degree in literature, she graduated from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in 1993. She made her feature film debut with the film The Iguana, based on the novel by Anna Maria Ortese, in competition at the 2004 Torino Film Festival. In addition to the short films Parigi Cambia and Aspettando il treno, she has written and directed several documentaries in France and Italy, including: Sono nato comunistaThe Voiceless and the award-winning Heart of a Murderer.
